Behind the Scene - Pattern Making

November 2, 2015 Sarah Foy

How do we go from a detailed sketch or idea to a finished dress …we measure and make up each unique design for each bride. Taking time to draft a pattern specific to each individual means that every shape and size is catered for.

Pattern making is a personal love of mine, there is nothing like transforming a sketch to a 2D pattern, then into cotton fabric for the full 3D effect..like magic. Transforming a piece of pattern paper into a bodice that fits like a glove is very satisfying work.

This allows us to see how the dress is looking, a bride can be fitted in her cotton mock up and get a feel for how the dress will fit and develop. I can see what needs changing for each shape and design. It also gives us the freedom to change and personalise each design to add or subtracted elements that are working or not.

Its from this mock up fitting that we then alter and perfect our individual pattern. The next exciting stage is cutting in the beautiful silk and lace.
